Read archives in place
Log bundles, release packages and support dumps often arrive as .tar.gz files. To read one file in them, you normally extract the whole archive first. The Tar.gz Viewer lets you look inside from VS Code:
- Open an archive (
.tar.gzor.tgz) to see a filterable list of its files, with size and modification date. - Click a file to open it in a read-only editor tab, with syntax highlighting from its file extension.
- Right-click an archive in the Explorer and pick a file from a quick-pick list.
- Open a plain .gz file (for example
app.log.gz) to see its decompressed text. - Binary files are detected and not dumped into the editor.
How it handles your files
- Nothing is extracted. The archive is decompressed in memory; no files are written to disk.
- Read-only. The archive and the files you open from it can't be changed.
- Local. Files are read through VS Code; the extension makes no network requests.
- Formats: GNU, POSIX pax and ustar tar, including long file names.
