Quick start

Open an archive, find a file, and read it.

Open your first archive

  1. 1
    Click a .tar.gz or .tgz file in the Explorer.

    It opens in the Tar.gz Viewer, the default editor for *.gz and *.tgz files.

    Type in the filter box

    to narrow the list, for example .log or a folder name.

  3. 3
    Click a file

    or press Enter to open the first match. It opens in a read-only tab.

Archives outside your workspace

Run Tar.gz Viewer: Open File from Archive... from the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P). Pick an archive in the dialog, then pick a file from the list. See Opening files.

An archive opens in another editor?

VS Code may remember an earlier editor choice. Right-click the file, choose Open With…, select Tar.gz Viewer, and then Configure default editor for that file type.
