Common problems
- Decompressed archive is … MB, above the tarGzViewer.maxArchiveSizeMB limit
- Raise tarGzViewer.maxArchiveSizeMB, or extract the archive with another tool.
- Could not read archive
- The file is damaged or truncated and can't be decompressed. Check that it downloaded completely.
- A .gz file opens as text instead of a list
- It is a single compressed file, not a tar archive. That is expected.
- A file shows [Binary file: … — not displayed]
- It has NUL bytes in its first 8 KB. Extract the archive to open it with the right tool.
- Text looks garbled
- Files are read as UTF-8. Files in other encodings may not display correctly.
- A .tar file does not open in the viewer
- Use Tar.gz Viewer: Open File from Archive... from the Command Palette and pick the .tar file.
- A .gz or .tgz file opens in another editor
- Use Open With…, choose Tar.gz Viewer, then Configure default editor.
- The extension does not install
- It needs VS Code 1.85 or later. Check Help › About.
