Three ways to open a file
| From | How |
|---|---|
| The listing | Click a file row, or filter and press Enter. |
| The Explorer | Right-click a .gz or .tgz file and choose Open File from Archive.... A quick-pick lists the files with their folder and size; type to search by file name or folder. |
| The Command Palette | Run Tar.gz Viewer: Open File from Archive..., choose an archive (.gz, .tgz or .tar) with Browse Archive, then pick a file. |
The file tab
- Read-only: you can read, search, select and copy, but not edit. To change a file, extract the archive.
- Highlighted by extension: the tab is named after the file, so VS Code picks the language from its extension (
.ts,.yaml,.json…). - Preview tab: it opens as a preview, so the next file you open replaces it unless you keep it (double-click the tab).
- Text is read as UTF-8.
Binary files
A file with a NUL byte in its first 8 KB is treated as binary. Instead of its content, the tab shows one line such as [Binary file: project/docs/logo.png (16 B) — not displayed].
